Recovery After a Vasectomy: What to Expect Day by Day
A vasectomy is a straightforward procedure, but what happens after you leave the clinic is just as important as what happens during it. Understanding vasectomy recovery before you have the procedure takes the guesswork out and helps you plan your recovery process.
Here’s what to expect.
The Day of the Procedure
The procedure itself takes about an hour, which includes at least 30 minutes of resting with an ice pack before you head home. We recommend that you have someone to drive you home. Local anesthetic means you’re awake and comfortable but getting behind the wheel straight after is not advisable.
Once home, lie down for at least another hour with an ice pack applied to the area. Early icing significantly reduces the risk of bruising and swelling.
Days 1–4: Rest Up
The first four days are simple: rest. Keep activity low, elevate where possible, and continue with regular icing.
This is the stage where some blokes decide the advice doesn’t apply to them. The ones who push through too early aren’t heroes, they are the ones who end up with pain, swelling, and a longer recovery overall. Dr Sheen has seen it happen.
Days 5–10: Easing Back In
After four days, ‘most’ men can return to work, if work doesn’t involve heavy lifting. The rule for the first 10 days is nothing heavier than 10kg. For vasectomy recovery time in physical or trade roles, it is recommended that blokes allow 10 days before returning to demanding activity.
During this time, washing is important too. It is recommended that you stick to showering only, no baths and no swimming. When in the shower, keep your back to the water and keep the area as dry as possible.
After 10 Days
For most men, life is back to normal. The wound has healed, activity resumes, and discomfort is minimal to none.
The 3-Month Mark
A vasectomy is not immediately effective. After the procedure, a semen test is required at three months to confirm there are no sperm present. Once the result comes back negative for sperm, you can consider yourself sterile. At this point you can stop using other contraception.
