All the Details here about your Procedure

Before your Procedure

Before your surgery, you’ll meet with our doctor for a consultation. You can either book your consultation and surgery on separate days, or choose to have both on the same day, this is our most popular option.

Once your surgery date is confirmed, please carefully follow the instructions below.

Two weeks prior to your vasectomy, please stop taking aspirin and anti-inflammatories. These medications can thin the blood and increase the chance of bleeding. You can still take other pain relief medication.

For your safety, please avoid aspirin and other anti-inflammatory medications before your procedure. If these drugs have been taken recently, the doctor may need to postpone your surgery. If you have a medical need to continue them, please speak with Dr. Sheen during the consultation appointment.

One week prior shave around the penis to the bottom of the scrotum. Do NOT use “hair remover creams”. Arrange for someone to drive you home from the procedure.

On the day of the procedure

  • Please take a shower before your appointment
  • No eating for 4 hours beforehand
  • No drinking for 2 hours beforehand

During the Procedure

Local anaesthetic is injected into the area, this numbs the area for a painless procedure.

A small incision is made into the scrotum. The tubes on each side are cut and separated. With the open-ended technique, one end is left open to reduce pressure on the testis.

Should you feel anxious; a Penthrox inhaler is available, it is easy to use and will help you feel more relaxed.

Although vasectomy reversals are possible, a vasectomy should be considered a permanent form of birth control.

Post Procedure Care

To maintain the best results possible, please follow the below post-procedure care notes. The more care you take in the first few days after the operation the quicker the recovery. Normal sexual activity can start 48 hours after the procedure.

Showers

After 6 hours a quick shower can be taken but keep the wound as dry as possible. Until the wound is completely healed keep showers short and NO baths, saunas etc.

Wound

The wound will be small. To care for the wound, cover with a Band-Aid.

Rest Up

For the first 4 days keep unnecessary standing or walking to a minimum.

Lifting

For the first 4 days, we recommend NO lifting. From day 5 to day 10 only lift a maximum of 10 kgs.

Support

For one week after the procedure, please wear tight underwear, including wearing them at night.

Pain

Significant pain is very rare. Some people notice lower abdominal pain which is due to movement of the vas during the operation.

Pathology Tests

To ensure the procedure was successful, a seminal analysis is required.

Three months after your vasectomy please ensure you remember to have a seminal analysis. Prior to the test you must have ejaculated 25 times. Please do not use condoms to collect the semen as these may contain chemicals which can affect the result.
